The BEST Dairy Free Ranch Dip: Nut Free & Vegan Option
When someone has an allergy to milk or eggs (or both), it can be very challenging to find a good ranch dressing, as most store-bought versions contain one or the other. Also, if you add tree nut allergies, it gets even harder as most vegan ranch dressings rely on tree nuts, or just don’t taste good either. The one exception we have found is that Hidden Valley, sells a plant powered ranch dressing that probably works for most people and is pretty tasty! Unfortunately it doesn’t work for us. My kiddo has a mustard allergy, which this product does contain as a spice ingredient.
We have been using this spice blend from Penzey’s spices for the last 6 years now and we really love it. Even when compared to the Kroger dip mix, my kids who could taste test it with me, unanimously agree that the Penzey’s is our definite favorite. The best part is that they label every single spice! Please note, it does not have any milk, egg, or wheat ingredients added, BUT is not labeled gluten free. I know from being in their stores, that they do sell other products containing many other allergens, including milk, sesame, and mustard. We are ok with this, but always use your own discretion and call them if you need shared line information.
The BEST Dairy-Free Ranch Recipe (Vegan and Top-9-Free Adaptations)
Contains: Coconut & Possibly Egg
Ingredients:
1/2 c. Hellmann’s Mayo (vegan for egg free)
1/2 c. Wayfare Sour Cream or Kroger’s Simple Truth Vegan Sour Cream (or substitute your favorite dairy-free sour cream including Tofutti)
1/2-1 tsp. Penzeys Spices Buttermilk Ranch Seasoning (or homemade seasoning of your choice)
Directions:
If using a solid dairy-free sour cream substitute such as Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream, warm it for a few seconds in the microwave before mixing all the ingredients together. Refrigerate for 1 hour or more for the most developed flavor, but it is delicious right away. Enjoy!
Penzey’s Spices Buttermilk Ranch Mix:
There is NO milk added to this ranch seasoning mix, despite its name. While there is no added wheat in the ingredient list, it is also NOT labeled gluten-free.

Wayfare Sour Cream is one of our favorite dairy-free products! They have great allergy information online, too. I hope you can find it near you.

Hellmann’s Mayo:
Finding mayonnaise made without mustard has truly been challenging! Mustard is a common emulsifier in both vegan and traditional mayonnaise recipes. A while back, I contacted Unilever about their mayo and was told that the Hellmann’s real mayo and carefully crafted (vegan included), did not include mustard as part of the recipe. However, since mustard is not a top allergen within the US, they also do not test for mustard cross contamination. We have eaten this safely for years, BUT always do what is best for your allergy situation. Also, make sure you always confirm allergy information with companies yourself so you know the information is up to date and safe for you!
If you need a vegan mayo recipe you can adapt to fit your needs, I made this recipe for YEARS. It is soy-based, but very tasty and a very good substitute. Also, you can adjust the spices as you need to, which is wonderful. Just make sure to use unsweetened, unflavored soy milk or your mayo will not taste good at all. Tell me how I know. Haha
