Best Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes!
This is THE BEST Dairy-Free mashed potatoes recipe you will ever have. My recipe is inspired by my grandmother’s “party potatoes” which I modified with my favorite dairy-free products from @Country Crock (not sponsored). She always included chicken stock in her potatoes, which I loved. For me, mashed potatoes must be made with russet potatoes, which I prefer to steam in my instant pot, but cook them on the stove if you prefer. Some tips from Thomas Keller were key though, which I saw in a video from Maxi’s kitchen. I used Thomas Keller ratios of butter and cream in my final recipe, which I have been eye balling for years, and I used his recommendation on ricing the cooked potatoes for the smoothest texture possible. These potatoes are decadent, just like ones you’ve had at holiday parties over the years. No one will know these mashed potatoes are dairy-free!
Need a side dish to prepare ahead? These potatoes reheat wonderfully in the oven or microwave! Just let them cool before covering and putting in your fridge a day or two before your event. The day of your party, allow about an hour to 90 minutes for them to reheat in the oven covered with foil @ 350 degrees Fahrenheit or reheat in the microwave covered with plastic wrap. Stir every 90 seconds or so. Top with additional dairy-free butter for a made fresh taste!
Make sure to save this recipe and share it with others so you are ready for your next holiday dinner!
Thank you @maxiskitchen and @chefthomaskeller for the inspiration and cooking tips, which made this allergy-friendly recipe possible! Here is the link to Maxi’s Kitchen’s mashed potato video, which inspired me: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DA1GdIxRLuq

Ingredients
- For every 2 pounds of peeled and chopped russet potatoes (or Yukon gold if you are going with Thomas Keller’s advice), you need:
- 1/2 c. Country Crock Plant Cream
- 6 TBS Country Crock plant sticks with olive oil (plus more for serving)
- 1/4 tsp. Organic Lower Sodium Better than Bouillon. Feel free to add more if you prefer a stronger chicken flavor. See allergy my notes below
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- I cook the large, peeled and chopped chunks of potatoes by steaming them in my instant pot on a trivet. Add 1 cup of water and a low trivet to the instant pot. Add the large chunks of peeled potatoes and cook for 15 minutes on high pressure. Allow them to sit for another 10 minutes of a natural pressure release before venting the steam.
- While the potatoes cook, add the dairy-free cream, dairy-free butter, and safe bouillon to a large pot (see the notes below about the bouillon) and warm them gently. When the potatoes are done being cooked, carefully rice the potatoes into the pot with the dairy-free cream mixture. This is a great family bonding activity to do with your teenagers! Gently fold the mixture together and transfer to a serving dish. Top with additional pats of dairy-free butter.
Notes
Potato ricer
I have been making mashed potatoes for YEARS without a potato ricer. I love using a hand mixer or just a potato masher myself. I finally bought a potato ricer when my husband said he preferred the texture of instant potatoes to my homemade ones. WHAT!!! I couldn’t believe it and was on a mission to make the BEST mashed potatoes of my life. A potato ricer is entirely unnecessary, as potatoes taste wonderful however they are mashed. However, if you are wanting the most luxuriously smooth mashed potatoes, you can’t go wrong with a potato ricer. I bought an Oxo potato ricer and while it worked well, I don’t know if I would recommend this exact one.
Better than Bouillon
Better than Bouillon is NOT gluten-free and would not be safe for someone with celiacs disease. Whether it is safe for someone with a wheat allergy would be for your to research and determine. If you need gluten-free potatoes, use a different type of chicken bouillon flavoring, such as Orrington Farms. I have not used Orrington Farms myself though, and if you have a mustard allergy like we do, I do not know if it contains any added mustard or not, but I will intend to update this post if/when I find out.
Better than Bouillon sells many different products, but ONLY the organic versions of the chicken varieties I have found are made without added dairy. I find a low sodium organic version at Costco, which does not have added dairy.
Other Allergies
- Soy
- Use the Earth’s Balance Soy Free butter substitute or the Good and Gather soy-free sticks sold at Target instead of Country Crock.
- Pea protein, lentil, or coconut allergy
- I’m sorry that the dairy-free products contain pea protein, coconut, and lentils. I know that is hard! Substitute your favorite dairy-free substitute such as Melt in place of the Country Crock. In place of the dairy-free heavy cream, I recommend your favorite dairy-free sour cream substitute and some unsweetened, unflavored dairy-free milk of your choice.
